In 2005 Incubate started as a DIY festival. We wanted to promote our local scene and bring cool artists to the southern part of the Netherlands. The first edition we did not want to apply for funding, but work things out quite smoothly. It worked out well. There were some cool performances. We decided to go on, but stay true to our roots.
Now Incubate has grown to a rewarding place for artists and audiences. We've brought artists like Hermann Nitsch, Sun Ra Arkestra, Wardruna, NEU!, Peter Brötzmann, Jacob Kirkegaard, Zola Jesus, Black Mountain, Dan Deacon, Damien Jurado, Ryan Trecartin, Rob Scholte, Six Organs of Admittance, Rummelsnuff, Hauschka, DJ /rupture, Hank Shocklee/The Bomb Squad, Shackleton, Neon Indian, Serena-Maneesh, Soap&Skin, Jandek, Negativland, The Damned, The Caretaker, Psychic TV, Gravenhurst, Future of the Left, Pelican, Watain, Machinefabriek, Shining, Wire and speakers like Charles Leadbeater, Andrew Keen, Hank Shocklee and Matt Mason,Mason.
According to independent visitors research our audience rewards the festival with an 8.4. 97,5% of the visitors would recommend it to friends and the people of Tilburg voted for Incubate as the best event in 2008. We even beat the fun fair.
Also the critics like us: “To be truthful, Incubate is more than a festival: it’s a form of arts activism, but based on a liberal arts ethos rather than any specific political identity. Incubate genuinely believes in the power of the arts to refine the fabric of public life. It’s true that, for the duration of the festival, municipal, public, rural and even ecclesiastical spaces are repurposed towards the radical party that the Incubate team has imagined into being; wandering from venue to venue, back and forth across the city, gives the impression of a net being woven, a collective effort. But at the heart of Incubate is a set of performances that, in the course of the festival, cover more emotional and philosophical ground than any festival I’ve known before.” The Quietus (USA), 15-10-2010
"And with damn near every last square inch of the city littered with preamps and patch cords, that can only mean one thing: a killer lineup." Henk van Straten in de Nieuwe Revu “In the closing hours of the festival, the organizers relate their burgeoning plans for 2010: “Whatever we do, we want it to be completely different.” It’s this straightforwardly adventurous spirit that makes Incubate a joyous, if exhausting, experience, and it’s something from which UK festival organizers could learn.” The Wire, dec. 2009, p. 79
"It was a nice show and that's all I have to say", laat Jurado uiteindelijk dan toch los. (KindaMuzik over Damien Jurado)
Brabants Dagblad, 22-09-08, p. 8
"This festival truly is the most remarkable experience and needs to be witnessed by anybody who genuinely loves leftfield music and still holds a torch for the idea that Independent Culture can exist without having to compromise itself or secrete itself away in an elitist hidey hole. In a word, then, Incubate is incredible." Drowned in Sound.com (UK)
Rita & Hermann Nitsch
“Hello all you fine and awesome folks. I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for the amazing time I had. It was one of my favorite things I have ever done. Nobody has ever offered me such a project or cared that much about what I do to trust me that much. I was a bit teary eyed after the whole show because for me, it was the end of a long project and I feel like it was actually pulled off, something I wasn't so sure about until the last song. I was going to go to the after party to tell this to all of you but I ended up collapsing in my bed with jet lag and a belly full of beer and chicken. So it goes. Most of all, I feel like I know a bit more about Tiburg and the Brabant area now. I feel like it is a second home now. I feel like if I wanted to, i could just get a plane ticket to Amsterdam, home on the train and come visit you guys. Maybe rent a bike and cruise around the countryside. I feel like I have made some great friends and I already miss you all.“ Six Organs of Admittance
"Leaving this festival felt a lot like being kicked out of musical heaven" Harryparry in reactie op recensie Drowned in Sound.com
"I can't tell you how much we enjoyed to be in Tilburg! It was a feeling like an old Italian family get's together to celebrate live and music! We met so many interesting people, listen to so gorgeous music... And got great party!!! And I have to make a BIG, BIG, BIG compliment for all the organizers of the festival. Everybody who was involved got an ear for problems without been stressed or unfriendly and solve them fast - this, while working whole day and night, is real special! Perfect hospitality from kind hosts! Print out his mail and put it on the incubate-office wall, that everybody gets this feedback from the GLOBALIBRES!" Globalibre DJ Team
"Incubate zorgt voor spanning, rariteiten, verwondering, kippenvel, gruwel, kortom emotie. Een letterlijk soms mindblowing trip." Spinner.com, 2008
"Well, as far as I'm concerned, it was the coolest venue we've played so far. I found the amphitheater and the surrounding forest to be super inspiring...we had a wicked forest jam even before the show began...and the show itself felt epic. Every one involved was very accommodating and hanging out in the puppet theater was very cozy and a nice break from the usual club atmosphere. Relaxing with Bunny the pony and all the toads on their toadstools, not your average show! I really hope they continue to have shows there, as any band would be honored to play such a fantastic venue."
Kwadratuur.be
