There are many examples of commercial companies like Zappos who use Twitter for customer service. It helped them in building their business. This blogpost from Econsultancy gives you some advice on how to spread word on the stuff you’re doing. This is a nice post if you’re a musician.

But how do you use Twitter if you’re a cultural institution? In The Netherlands some venues like Muziekgebouw, 013 and Effenaar have their own Twitter account. If you’re Holland Festival, Concertgebouw, Pinkpop Festival or De Doelen: We’ve claimed your account. Please send us an e-mail and you can have it back. What are the do’s and dont’s for setting up a Twitter account? We'll give you some

1) Make someone responsible
Hire your whizzkid who evangelizes Twitter in your organization. We have Erik. He’s running and improving our accounts, checking out other people but most of all: he believes in Twitter and gets everyone hooked to it. During lunch or during drinks: he's integrating it in our daily life.

2) Invest

Word of mouth is the most important factor in contemporary marketing. Flyers and posters are responsible for only a minor effect. If you’re using flyers and posters, why don’t you invest in a digital marketeer which truly get a buzz going?

3) Time
Take your time for digital marketing. Social networks are input generated. The more you give the more you get. Now you say: “hey, I’m too busy running the rest of my organization.” Indeed digital marketing costs time, like everything else. But it also pays off. And developing an organization means investing in new stuff, you know.

4) Divide
Buzz marketing is like a virus. You can choose for one connection, only from an organizational perspective. But there are also people working in your organization. Those people have something to tell. So let them tell it in a personal way.

5) Encourage all your employees
Word of mouth is one of the key factors in promoting culture. It's like the mob: My people will talk to your people. By encouraging everyone to tweet you make your ecosystem broader. You also see what makes people tick. At ZXZWIncubate Vince is Twittering about his stuff at Generation Bass. He has his own followers. Joost is Twittering on marketing, funding and schlager. He has totally different followers.

6) Encourage your supporters
Lesson #1 in life is: be grateful. If you see people that like your stuff: thank them and get in touch. Maybe you can transform them from consumers into prosumers.

7) Put it in your ecosystem
Setting up a Twitter account is not enough. Social networks are input based. The more you give the more you get. So if you start: use it and if you use: start it. Follow people, generate content, get inspired and have fun!

8) Connect it with your other networks
You might already run a website, a Facebook, a blog etc.. Use Twitter to generate traffic to your other media and vice versa. It makes your digital network stronger. There's a large variety on tools connecting the social networks and through that you create your very own spider web.

9) Split
The message is the message. You might already run a blog, program updates etc.. Create Twitter accounts for all of them. Your users want to be updated on specific stuff. Maybe they're not interested in your blogposts, but simply want to be updated on your festival or agenda updates. Give them the chance to do that.

10) Be selective
People allow you to connect with their personal life by letting you in their lifestream. So don't annoy them with what kind of sandwich you're eating or other useles crap. Tell them what they want to hear from this channel.

11) Be personal
Letters are something for old people and formality is something for the concert halls. Communicate in a personal way.

12) RSS feed

Connect your Twitter account with the RSS feed of your blog or program updates. This can be easily done via twitterfeed.com.

13) Interact
Don't only add an RSS feed on your account. You also have to react on other Tweets and be part of the community! It's not only about sending out information, it's also about asking feedback and input and reacting on other posts.

14) Search
Of course you're curious if people are talking about you. Maybe the artist you want to book is big in the Twitter world. Search for comments and connect with those people.

15) Connect
Is there someone talking about you? Follow him or her!

16) Use the hashtag
During your event you can encourage people to use a hashtag like #zxzw#Incubate in their tweets. It allows them to connect with each other and adds a digital critical stream to your event .

17) Ask
Looking for a solution? Ask your followers! All together, they know more than you do.

18) Retweet
There're a lot of interesting people on Twitter, tweeting interesting stuff. If something's also interersting for you network, just Retweet the tweet. It's like forwarding an e-mail!
