Binnen het filmprogramma van Incubate zal dit jaar de volle breedte van piraterij te zien zijn. Van 'mockbusters' tot remakes, van 'sweded' films tot re-cuts en found footage, het gebruik van reeds bestaand materiaal is hier in overvloed aanwezig. Creatief hergebruik van scripts, namen en beeldconcepten is één van de factoren van piraterij die we tijdens deze editie van Incubate proberen uit lichten in alle disciplines en in welke discipline kan dat beter dan in film?

Denk aan Turkse remakes van Star Trek, The Exorcist en E.T., Indiase remakes van Superman en Fright Night of de Braziliaanse Star Wars. Deze laatste werd zelfs nog eerder uitgebracht dan de originele versie en bevatte alle Star Wars karakters, maar ook een overvloed aan zelf toegevoegde elementen, rare scenes, liedjes, dans en vreemde special effects. De film werd een grotere hit in Zuid-Amerika dan de originele versie, terwijl hij in minder dan een maand tijd gemaakt was, met nauwelijks budget. Tijdens Pirate Cinema worden verschillende van deze remakes vertoond.

Daarnaast zal er een special te zien zijn rond één van de meest gehate filmstudio's in Hollywood: The Asylum! De mensen achter The Asylum produceren zogenaamde 'mockbusters', vaak gemaakt met een laag budget, schijnbaar gemaakt met de intentie om mee te varen op de publiciteit van een major film met een soortgelijke titel of hetzelfde thema. Vaak worden deze films gelijk op video uitgebracht op het moment dat de mainstream film in de bioscoop draait of in de videotheek ligt. Op Incubate zal onder andere de Europese première van Titanic II te zien zijn, het langverwachte vervolg op de jaren '90 blockbuster. De toegang tot Pirate Cinema is gratis.

Pirate Cinema De precieze omvang van de schade die piraterij aan de reguliere handel toebrengt is moeilijk te bepalen. BREIN schat de totale schade door verschillende vormen van piraterij in Nederland in 2008 op ongeveer 315 miljoen euro. Die bestaat dan uit 90 miljoen schade door commerciële handel in illegale kopieën, 45 miljoen schade door de weggeefcultuur van kopieën op cd-r en dvd-r en 180 miljoen euro schade door het downloaden van illegaal op Internet aangeboden bestanden met auteursrechtelijk beschermde entertainmentcontent. Hoeveel schade werd geleden door in minder bedeelde landen Hollywood classics met een klein budget na te maken is niet precies bekend, maar het is wellicht de meeste vermakelijke vorm van piraterij. Voor het filmprogramma worden titels samengebracht die de afgelopen jaren werden geproduceerd door filmstudios in landen waar men niet de benodigde financiën bijeen kon brengen om de originele versies te tonen. Soms werden deze kopieën eerst in de markt gezet om daarna met de opbrengsten de originelen naar het land te halen en te laten nasynchroniseren, soms werd een inheemse versie gemaakt om beter aan te sluiten op de lokale gewoonten en culturele verschillen. Maar meestal werden deze goedkopere, lokaal gesproken films gewoon gebruikt om met een bekend thema of aansluitend op buitenlandse marketingcampagnes gewoon geld in het laatje te brengen.

Denk aan Turkse remakes van Star Trek, The Excorcist, E.T., the Wizzard of Oz of India’s remakes van Superman, Fright Night. Een groot succes was bijvoorbeeld ook de Braziliaanse versie van Star Wars, deze werd vijf maanden voor de officiële release uitgebracht, met wel degelijk alle Star Wars personages, maar ook veel zelfverzonnen elementen, vreemde decors, liedjes en dans en bizarre speciale effecten. Deze film was in Zuid Amerika een grotere hit dan de originele versie, terwijl hij in minder dan een maand tijd in elkaar gedraaid werd met bijna geen budget.

Deze films tonen een hoge inventiviteit. Ze nemen elementen van de Hollywood blockbusters, maar voegen daar ook zoveel (gedwongen) improvisatie aan toe dat ze bijna niet meer met het origineel te vergelijken zijn. Een schoolboek voorbeeld van creatieve piraterij dat leidt tot nieuwe bezienswaardigheden. TURKISH E.T AKA BADI
Turkey 1993
A Turkish remake of the classic American family film ET, only this one is better. The alien, this time known as "Badi" looks like it was found in dumpster and then stuffed with a clumsy midget! Watch for the roller coaster scene, it's a real knee slapper! Any fan of the always amazing Turkish style cinema should not miss this masterpiece.

Another prime example of the rip-off potential in Turkish cinema, this time a scene for scene remake of the American horror classic The Exorcist that’s better then the original. Gone is the preachy pro-religious subtext of the original, now we get only the goods; with an onslaught of more pissing, gore, puking and nudity. What more do you want in a remake? TURKISH STAR TREK
Turkey 1973 Part of a comedy series called “Turist Omer” about a goofy guy in a poor excuse for a cowboy hat who always winds up in bizarre situations. This time around, Omer gets mistakenly beamed aboard the Starship Enterprise where he’s dropped right into the middle of a Turkish rip-off of “Star Trek” episode “The Man Trap.” You get Turkish replications of all of your favorite Star Trek characters, including Mr. Spock (who is known as Mr. Spak in this one), Captain Kirk, Ohura and enough bad space monsters and fake rocks to tide over even the most fickle Dr. Who fan! Like “Turkish Star Wars,” this film shamelessly swipes footage from the original.

TURKISH STAR WARS
Turkey 1984
For anyone who hasn't seen Turkish cinema, Turkish Star Wars is certainly the best starting point. Using actual footage from the original Star Wars, the story is about two space fighter pilots shot down over a desert planet who discover a colony of people that are oppressed by horseback riding mutant savages! It's up to the pilots to save these people from the mutants! Combining life size evil muppets with a Flash Gordon like bad guy and stealing not only footage and soundtrack from Star Wars, but music from Indiana Jones.

TURKISH WIZARD OF OZ
Turkey, 1979 This one goes down in history as one of the most amazing remakes ever made! Turkish Wizard of Oz gets off to a quick start: Once in Oz, Dorothy encounters a group of dwarfs dressed as toy solders; the Scarecrow; the Tin Man; and the Lion (a fat guy in a pair of brown pajamas with hair glued to it). The wicked witch pursues Dorothy with a group of men dressed as Roman solders. Once the crew reach the wizard, they simply find a skull on a table in front of the fireplace. Watch the Scarecrow tear himself apart to hide inside his own hey! Bonus Feature included on this disc: Tramps & The Wizard of Orox, starring the Brazilian 3 Stooges, The Tramps; complete with a Tin Man (a guy in a big metal garbage can), a lion and a group black guys dressed as singing/dancing vultures.

TURKISH YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

It seems as though the Turkish have ripped off ever single famous American film, but this one has to be the most bizarre one yet! A scene for scene remake of the classic Mel Brooks’ comedy Young Frankenstein, made one year after the release of the original. Complete with Igor, Frau Blücher, Inga and the saddest Frankenstein’s monster you will EVER see! Taking familiar scenes from the original, like the out of control bookshelf joke, or a dead guy’s hand as your hand joke, or the abnormal brain joke, the movie feels incredibly weird. There is something very strange about watching these familiar jokes done in an entirely new and foreign fashion. For fans of the one of kind genre of Turkish rip off cinema, this is an absolute must see.
