What are social media? Merely the 2.0 versions of posters and flyers? For many companies they are. For Incubate, social media are more than just visibility. At least they have the potential to be more than that. One-way,One-way and one-to-many communication belongs to the past. Big companies and media moguls are not the only ones with the power to transmit their messages anymore. Everybody has the power to get its voice heard.

[Untitled]Through our social media channels we try to be in constant dialogue with our visitors, artists, the press and other people interested in our festival. We try to engage them by asking our followers for advice on bookings, on festival locations or on funding and marketing related matters.

Because social media are important for us, we constantly keep asking ourselves how both our goals and objectives and those of our participants can be served and improved. Of course, following Incubate on Twitter, becoming friends with us on Facebook, Hyves or Last.fm is an easy choice, something that can be quickly done. But what’s the real value of these online friendships? Certainly now...these days. It wasn’t for nothing that, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary, ‘Unfriend’ was the word of the year 2009.

Our goal is notisn't to have 5.000 friends on Facebook before the end of 2010. WeWe'd rather have 1.000 friends that we can build a rewarding relationship with, people that believe in us and can function as creative peers. That’s why, inspired by and partly based upon the code of conduct for social media as laid down by the Social Media Professionals Association, we present you the Incubate Social Media Statement.

1. Basics

1. People that are satisfied and interested will say good things about us
This is the basis for the use of social media. We have to make sure that we keep our participants satisfied. As a result we hope they are willing to say good things about us in return.

2. Honesty is our medium
As an organization, we never tell people what they should say about Incubate or how they should say it. We believe that people should have the freedom to tell what they think about Incubate in their own words, whether we agree with it or not.

3. We start, support and simplify the possibilities to share
We try to stimulate communication. We want make it easy for consumers to converseconversate with each other, create interesting topics to talk about and create communities to share ideas. For traditional marketingmarketing, pushing information was a core business. We try to help consumers to exchange ideas in a more natural way.

4. Word of Mouth can not be forced or faked
Deception, infiltration, dishonesty and other ways to manipulate consumers or conversations are objectionable. As an organization we don’t do that.

5. Social media marketing empowers the participants
The power is with the participants. They form their own rules regarding their relationship with our festival. They demand satisfaction, respect, honesty, openness, good products and services and a good customer service. When we succeed in providing them with that, it’s more likely they will share their experiences with friends and acquaintances. Our marketeers work to accelerate this process and try to replace aggressive advertising with support and open and desired communication.

2. Our means to reach these goals:

2.1.1 Incubate website

This is our main spot online. Here, we assemble all the information you need. Information about venues and locations, tickets and timetables, and most importantly: artists. You can read about them or watch movies and pics. But let’s be honest.. writing 200+ bio's is one hell of a job. So do us a favor and help us improve what’s on there. The artists-part of our website is made in wiki-style which allows you to change it. Don’t agree with the information in that particular bio? That's cool, change it! You shot a great video or a nice photo of band X performing somewhere else? Add them! The more the merrier.

2.1.2 Incubate Newsletter
Subscribing for the Incubate newsletter means receiving updates about the latest developments concerning the festival. As the festival approaches the frequency will increase. We follow the Dutch Telecom Law. This means you will only receive information from and on Incubate and not from external parties.

2.2.1 Inlog.org
Besides sitting behind our desks, and organizing our things, we love to try to support independent culture. That’s why we blog. At our blog you can read news, watch clips, and other things we are eager to show you. Sometimes very funny. Sometimes very lame and sometimes dead serious. Besides that, we give away lots of stuff. Mostly tickets for venues and shows that we think are cool. Last but not least, we use this blog to post news updates related to our festival. Other suggestions for our blog? Please tell us. But… we don’t accept any money to promote causes. For these things we suggest Nalden. Make sure you stay posted by following this blog via Twitter on twitter.com/Incubateblog or by subscribing for the Inlog.org newsletter.

2.2.2 Inlog.org newsletter
We offer daily and weekly e-mail newsletters for all blog-categories! It’s up to you how you manage your subscription. Per category you can choose for a daily or weekly newsletter, or no newsletter at all. Please mind you are automatically subscribed to the Incu Thursday mailinglist as well, which means you will receive the new Incubate festival confirmations in your mailbox on 2pm every Thursday automatically.

2.3.1 Twitter/Incubatetilburg
By following @Incubatetilburg on Twitter, we keep you posted on the latest festival information. This might also be the quickest way to get in touch with us. By using Cotweet.com we make sure the right person of our organization quickly responds to your questions and comments. In return we'll sometimes ask for your opinions, suggestions or advice. If you are interested in the lives of our employees, check out their personal profiles at twitter.com/incubatetilburg/incubate-employees. Everything tweeted there is on their own behalf.

2.3.2 Twitter/Incubateblog
By following @Incubateblog on Twitter, we keep you updated on the latest posts on our blog inlog.org. Consider it like a RSS-feed. Although this is not our main channel for it, of course we are always willing to answer your questions or comments. Incidentally you’ll find a stray retweet here. Apart from that, we will not use this account to send you third party spam.
2.3.3. Twitter/IncubatetweetsBy following @Incubatetweets, you receive retweets of all the tweets that are incubate or #incu10 related. This way we keep you posted on the Incubate discourse on Twitter.

2.4.1 Last.fm/user/incubatetilburg
At our Last.fm profile you can see what we listen to at our office. The ones in charge of the music there can be our programmers as well as our interns or marketing employees. Mostly however, it will be the one turning the music full blast. At our profile you can also see the gigs either one, a few or all of us are attending. By adding us to your friend list, occasionally we’ll invite you to Incubate related events. Also via Last.fm we'll reply to your questions and suggestions. And though we are pretty quick, please note that sometimes this takes us longer than the blink of an eye. Musical suggestions are of course welcome (duh, that’s what Last.fm is for), but we kindly request you to post line-up tips here. If it’s your own band, please send them to bookingATincubateDOTorg

2.4.2 Facebook/Hyves/MySpaceFacebook/Hyves
Don’t like the pace of Twitter? Befriend us on one of these and we'll keep you posted on all the Incubate (related) news. Besides that, you’ll be able to meet other people interested in or attending Incubate. Please note that these networking sites are NOT monitored for line-up tips by our bookers! We kindly request you to post these here. If it concerns your own band send them to bookingATincubateDOTorg. But of course we will answer all your questions and read all your comments as quickly as possible.

2.5.1. Flickr

At our Flickr profile you can view pictures of Incubate and Incubate related events. It is the visual archive for Incubate. If you have photos which you think should be part of this collection, please drop us a message. Subscribing yourself to our feed will lead to notifications about new uploads. You are free to do whatever you want with these pictures under the creative commons 3.0 license.

2.5.2 YouTube/Vimeo
Both on our Vimeo and our YouTube channel, you’ll find video registrations from gigs, lectures and (art) performances connected to Incubate or Incubate related events. It is the audiovisual archive for Incubate. If you have videos that you think should be part of this collection, please drop us a note. Again, you're free to do whatever you want with these videos under the creative commons 3.0 license.

2.6 Getsatisfaction
To facilitate you posting tips, suggestions and advice, we use Getsatisfaction. So far, threads there have been about sleeping locations during the festival, line-up tips and suggestions for the new Incubate website. You can participate by either creating a Getsatisfaction account, or by logging in with your Twitter or Facebook account. Please note that, once you’ve left your message, you’ll automatically receive notifications on other people’s suggestions. If this annoys you, you can stop following the topic by changing your Getsatisfaction mail settings.

2.7 Social Festival Model
The Social Festival Model is our method to stimulate organizational co-creation using a free application. It's a model based on 'Wikinomics' to achieve collaboration in an open source business model. This means everything can be adjusted and complemented by everyone, but can also be freely copied and used by other institutions (under a creative commons 3.0 license). The Social Festival Model gives you access to the policy development of Incubate. You can read more on the background of this project right here. It's pretty easy: do you think you can make a contribution to anything mentioned on this open source site? We like you already! Don't hesitate to add and/or adjust anything you like, it's supposed to become an organic process between you and us. If you're not too sure about changing our stuff, you can also just make comments in the texts (preferably in red) so we or anyone else can take a look at it. Please note that the information on this site is a work in progress of our future dreams and thoughts from the past. Only the artists at the Incubate website are confirmed.
